The Urgent need for Digital Transformation of MSME Sector

In India we have there are about 63.05 million micro industries, 0.33 million small, and about 5,000 medium enterprises in the country and all of them catering to variety of Requirements and providing employment opportunities to Millions of people.

One of the major takeaway from the Covid Situation is India has a chance to become the alternate manufacturing destination for the World. A Refocused and Rebooted MakeInIndia Program can help create new Product developments, build new Manufacturing/Processing capabilities, develop supporting infra-structure and can help India become a viable alternative to China.

Career Opportunities in the Field of Civil Engineering

With the impacts from Corona there are many possibilities for people in various disciplines to lose their current jobs or not being to find a job or being forced to take an indefinite furlough. With the help of a Senior colleague and friend who is an Experienced Civil Engineer I have compiled few areas of Opportunities for People who have completed their Civil Engineering program or related field of Study.

I am excluding the obvious ones of a Campus Recruitment or Direct recruitment from Colleges or Technical Institutes. I have categorized the various areas to similar buckets for easier understanding. Please note this is not an exhaustive list – I am only listing some of the key areas that can help the thinking process.

Areas related to Construction/Maintenance Aspects
  • Becoming an Independent Builder
  • Becoming a Main Contractor or Sub-Contractor for Government projects or Private Projects or for other Large Construction Companies or Infra Structural Development Companies
  • Setting up Property Management Company offering Property Inspection Services, Construction Stage Inspection, Property Due Diligence Services.
  • Home Renovation Services Company offering Renovation services or upgrade of current Facilities or Building
  • Maintenance Services Company offering Total End to End Maintenance Services especially for Multi-Storeyed Buildings & Large Communities
  • Setting up a Facilities Management Company and offering services for Large Corporates or Industrial Parks in the areas of Facilities Management & Facilities Maintenance
Advisory Services, Consulting and Allied Services
  • Becoming a Registered Valuer for Land & Building Assets
  • Become a Certifying Authority under Local Planning Authority Bodies such as Registered Construction Engineer (RCE) , Registered Quality Auditor (RQA), Registered Architect (RA) , Registered Engineer (RE) or Registered Construction Management Agency (RCMA) , Registered Quality Audit Agency ( RQAA ), Registered Geo-technical Agency ( RGA ) etc.
  • Becoming a Competent person for Stability Certification under Inspector of Factories (Director of Industrial Safety & Health )
  • Becoming a Competent person and become a Factory Inspector under Inspector of Factories (Director of Industrial Safety & Health )
  • Becoming a Competent person for Stability certification of Public Buildings (Collector’s Panel of Engineers)
  • Becoming a Chartered Engineer with Institute of Engineers or Engineering Council of India to certify the capability of Government executed projects or Certifying Cost Abstracts for Government Tenders
  • Becoming a Consultant in the Areas of Structural Design, Structural Strength Analysis
  • Becoming a Consultant for Safety in respect of Large Construction Works employing 120 people
  • Setting up a Surveying Company offering Surveying Services for Private and Government Institutions and offering special services like Drone Based Surveying, Computerized Mapping Services or Map Geo Location Updation Services
  • Becoming a Design Consultant and offering Drawing Conversion  and Digitizing Old Paper Blueprints to Computerized Drawings for Government & Large Corporates
  • Setting up Building Stability Testing Lab / Soil Testing Lab / Water Testing Labs
  • Becoming a Consultant for Non-Destructive Testing of Civil & Structural Works
  • Becoming a Consultant for Effective Water Management Practices, Waste Disposal Practices, Water Recycling Methods & Water Treatment Methods.
These are some areas which can help people to find opportunities. Civil Engineering is an evergreen field and the opportunities are immense. In India we are just completing the first generation in terms of Building Useful Life  ( 60 years ) and Industries have grown only in the last 20 years. We are a very young nation and the demands and needs of people are only growing with respect to Homes and Offices and Factories.

Post Corona Startup - Safety Measures to follow for MSME's

So after 6 weeks of Lockdown for most of the MSME's ( Micro Small & Medium Enterprises ), the lockdown has been gradually released in few pockets with various restrictions and relaxations. This is a welcome move to begin with but at the same time knowing our lack of awareness or priority for Personal Safety  & Safety of people around us this  move can easily backfire because of few people's irresponsible behaviors.

Entreprenuership is rarely a Linear path

The above picture about Entrepreneurship is one of the best pictures about the journey of running a Business Venture. It is never a straight line, always filled with challenges, peaks, valleys, mountains to cross, calm rivers, rough seas , regulatory issues, cash flow crunches, employee challenges. I can keep on adding to the list.

MakeInIndia - Support Needed from Government for MSME's

The MakeInIndia pitch has been around for sometime and it has worked great to a larger extent with high value items and larger Manufacturers. Over the past 15 years we have newly managed to setup a fairly large and widespread Ecosystem for Mobile Phone Manufacturing Units, SMD Service Centers, additional  Investments in Automotive Manufacturing etc.

Make in India vs Make in China

If you have been closely monitoring the recent COVID-19 Situation going around the world and its unimagined impacts to human life, healthcare system, businesses, Country economy, political leaders etc it brings out clearly one aspect –most countries in the World are very much dependent on China for their products & supplies.

Can Slowdown be an opportunity for MSME Sectors

Slowdown can be an opportunity !! Since I ventured into entrepreneurship I have been part of one recession in 2012 and probably looking at another one in 2019-20 with the overall Global Scenario and now with the Corona Virus Impacts it is gonna further delayed. The Earlier looming Global recession was said to get better in 1-2 years but now with the COVID-19 impacts no one has a exact  idea of how bad the impacts or how  long  it would take to recover.but regardless there is not much I can do about but improve my current setup and look for alternate options to stay afloat and swing back when the tide turns around. Here are some ideas that I intend to do.

Importance of Sales & Operations Planning Process ( S&OP)

Sales & Operations Planning Process - S&OP is a process that shares information and brings people together in a structured, single plan that is defined across the functional departments. People often confuse S&OP with complex, expensive software tools, but the process comes first, not the system. If you haven’t thought out your process properly, then even the most expensive software in the world won’t save you. SOP Process is applicable to both Manufacturers and Large Retailers or Wholesalers.

Phase 1 was my first three years of Entrepreneurial Journey and I wrote down my experiences and learnings during Phase 1 in 2016 – Phase 2 Marks completion of 5 years and mostly covers the learning & experiences from years 4 & 5.
