MakeInIndia - Manufacturing ESD/Anti Static Products

Ever since the beginning of the Covid Lockdown across the World, many countries have started looking  for an alternative supply base to China for  many of the products they import from China. In India the MakeInIndia  pitch is getting stronger by the day and it sure going to see some momentum in the next few months to 1 year.

Why this is Critical - Electronics market in India is projected to reach US $ 228 bn by 2020.The electronics products segment contributed 82% to the overall market in 2015, while the rest comprised electronic components.  With the renewed focus on Electronics  Manufacturing in India we will have a rapid proliferation of companies in the areas of Electronics Manufacturing, Assembly and Repair/Servicing.

Introduction to ESD 

• ESD protection is required in all Electronic Manufacturing/Repair Centers for protection against Static Electricity
• ESD products are primarily used to prevent damage to electronic circuit boards and other ESD sensitive products from an electrostatic charge.  . 
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown.
• So it is essential  to have the entire Service area or Manufacturing area as EPA - ESD Protected Area.

How does damage from ESD happen

• When a statically-charged person or object touches an electrostatic discharge sensitive (ESDS) device, there is a possibility that the electrostatic charge could be drained through sensitive circuitry in the device. 
• If the electrostatic discharge possesses sufficient energy, damage could occur in the device due to localized overheating. Generally, devices with finer geometries are more susceptible to damage from ESD. 
• The modes in which ESD damage occurs are: (a) Discharge to the device (b) Discharge from the device (c) Field-induced discharge.

What is an ESD Protected Area  

• An ESD Protected Area (EPA) is a defined space within which all surfaces, objects, people and ESD Sensitive Devices (ESDs) are kept at the same electrical potential. 
• This is achieved by simply using only 'ground able' materials (i.e. materials with an electrical resistance typically of less than 10 power 9 ohms) for covering of surfaces and for the manufacture of containers and tools.
